Fits under the seat you already have
A bidet attachment is a thin panel that sits between your toilet pan and your existing seat. Turn the dial and a nozzle swings out under the bowl; turn it off and the nozzle retracts.
It is the middle option. A hand held sprayer is cheaper and more flexible, but you aim it. A powered bidet seat does more, including warm water and drying, but it replaces your seat and needs a socket beside the toilet, which most Irish bathrooms do not have.
What it is made of
This category is full of products that are moulded plastic end to end, so the specification is worth reading. Ours has an ABS housing, a brass T-adapter, a braided steel hose, and valve cores in metal and ceramic.
Ceramic discs are what modern taps use, and they are the reason a tap still shuts off cleanly after years rather than weeping. On a fitting that holds mains pressure permanently, that is the difference between one that lasts and one that drips into the pan.
Installation
The panel sits between the pan and your existing seat, held by the seat bolts, and the water comes from the cistern supply through the same kind of in-line T-adapter as our hand held sprayers. Installation and backflow requirements vary by property. Follow the product instructions and your local water rules, and ask a qualified plumber if you are not sure your supply is suitable.
Nothing is cut into the toilet itself, so it can come off again if you move.
The water is cold
Worth saying plainly rather than leaving you to discover it. The feed that fills your cistern is the only water at a toilet. Most people stop noticing within a week, and if warm water is what you actually want, the product for that is a powered bidet seat.
